Author Interview – Questions for Andrew J. Landis

Andrew J Landis

1) Can you tell us a little about yourself?

Hello, I’m Andrew J. Landis. I got my start writing back in early high school. I started writing fanfiction, but I soon wanted to create my own characters, worlds and stories. Writing continued to be simply a hobby for me for years. I started to dream of becoming a published author and worked towards finishing my first novel, ‘The Unknown Hunt.’

2) Brief description of your book?

‘The Unknown Hunt’ is about confronting and accepting the past, connecting with others and moving on to take control of the future.

Quade Colewell is wrongfully accused of killing his fiance and future father-in-law. He’s on the run until he’s saved by a trigger-happy woman named Laura. They fight together to confront their pasts.

3) How/ where did you research your novel?

Most of my research for things includes already having seen, read or watched things of a similar genre or setting. There’s some firearm stuff in my book that I already knew from watching informative programs, but I also had to go out and search for some minor specifics. The internet is amazing for that.

4) Do you have a favourite section of the book and why?

My favorites sections of the book are when the protagonists interact with the antagonist. They exemplify what the characters are about, what they’re capable of and how they deal with everyone else’s actions, motives, strengths and weaknesses.

5) What’s more important: characters or plot?

Characters. It’s all about the characters. While people can and do latch onto plot and settings, I feel that characters are what ties it all together and drives it. My scenes are typically character-driven or work towards informing or developing the character and their relationships or interactions with others. That’s not to say that everything else doesn’t matter, but characters are certainly the focal point.

6) What does your writing space look like?

My writing space is pretty clear most of the time. It’s just my large computer desk with a few knickknacks on it.

7) What authors do you like to read? What book or books have had a strong influence on you or your writing?

Brian McClellan’s Powder Mage trilogy and Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn series are among my favorite books and have influenced me the most. I’m sure there’s many subtle ways those works have influenced me, but I found myself drawn in by the characters in those novels and have taken queues from them.

8) What has been one of your most rewarding experiences as an author?

It was very exciting and rewarding to finish my first novel. I didn’t think it could get any better than that, but then people read my book. Having people talk to me and ask me questions about my book is easily the best part of the whole adventure.

9) Do you have any writing rituals?

I don’t have any writing rituals. I try to get writing in whenever I can. The closest thing to a ritual would be putting on some music when I sit down to write.

10) What does literary success look like to you?

I’d say literary success to me is having people read and talk about the stories I write. As I mentioned above, that’s what makes all the work worth it.
